The County Roscommon Heritage and Genealogy Centre has been offering a research service to people with Roscommon Roots since 1988. We are the official genealogy research Centre for County Roscommon, and the designated centre of the Irish Family History Foundation. We provide a professional genealogy research service, with each enquiry is individually researched by one of our team of experienced researchers, who have in-depth knowledge of the County and the sources for each area.
Over the decades we have collected, indexed and computerised all the major sources for family history research and this work is ongoing.
Our main sources are:
- Church records pre 1900
- Civil Records of birth, marriage and death, pre 1900
- Tithe Applotment Books (1820’s/1830’s)
- Griffith’s Valuation (1857)
- 1901 Census
- 1911 Census
- 1749 Elphin Diocesan Census
Other records are also indexed, these may not be relevant to in all research and vary from parish to parish.
Success of an application depends on the availability of records and the quality of the information provided. It is always advisable to gather as much information as possible prior to initiating a research request, as our fees are non-refundable. The Centre is non-profit making and all fees go the upkeep of our services.
Genealogical research takes time, and from it can take up to twelve weeks to complete a search, and seasonal demand may increase this waiting period. It is advisable to initiate your research in good time, and well in advance of any visit to Roscommon.
